I see hundreds of posts of capsule wardrobes, what is best, what's key to have, must haves and absolutely none of them ever relate to me.
So recently I read a capsule wardrobe should contain:
A black Blazer
A cigarette style pair of black trousers
A crisp white shirt
A pair of loafers
A pair of heels
A striped white and navy classic dress..................................
Im sorry but what a load of rubbish !
That might be exactly perfect for you but a capsule wardrobe should be personal to you. It's based on your style, your needs, your lifestyle and your budget.
I recently watched Louise on Lorraine and she was also giving advice on the perfect capsule wardrobe. Her suggestions were all backed up by photos of her in everything she was suggesting, so this was 'her' ideal wardrobe but maybe not yours.
So what if your capsule wardrobe needs to be:
A floral 1950's dress
A pair of flat pumps or trainers
A pair of pink glitter shoes
A set of pastel coloured cardigans - to cover the tops of your arms
A navy pair of wide legged trousers - because you've always hated skinny cuts
This might suit your style much more
Or Perhaps:
A bright plain dress - always long sleeved
Coloured trainers
Scarves - lots of scarves
Skinny legged jeans
Lots of jumpers as you are always cold
So what even is a capsule wardrobe?
It's a collection of clothes that creates you core wardrobe. Items that you wear over and over again and ones that go with everything in your wardrobe. They create your base wardrobe and you can mix and match everything around them. These items don't have to be neutral or black and white. They can be suited to you.
How do I work out what my capsule wardrobe should be?
This is when we need to find out what your style is, whats your likes and dislikes, whats your budget. A style session is perfect for this or if your already clear on that, then a wardrobe session is the perfect way to create a capsule wardrobe.
To try to start looking at this on your own, pull out your favourite things to wear. Work out what shoes you always reach for, do you go for a cardi or a blazer? Take a photo of these items and next time you go shopping, think about whether that new purchase will go with your existing wardrobe.
How many items should be in a capsule wardrobe?
Anything from approx 15 -30 items but this varies on each person. It might be more than 30 sometimes. For my own personal wardrobe I'm more 30 -50 items. I like to dress with lots of options. So don't think that a capsule wardrobe has to restrict you. Think of it as a base range in a collection and every season you add some new pieces to it.
What does a capsule wardrobe consists of?
Well again, everyones should be different and suited to your personal needs just like the examples above, but you want to consider a base core range of:
Dresses, Shirts, Tops, Jacket, Coat, Bags, Shoes, Trousers, Jeans, Knitwear
You may want two - a summer and a winter selection.
Why do I need a capsule wardrobe?
Well they actually help you save money went you go shopping. Knowing your core wardrobe means that when you go shopping you think more about what you are buying and what you need. When you start to create a capsule wardrobe, you will start to see that perhaps you already have plenty of trousers but really need some plain tops to go with them. It stops you from buying those impulse buys that sit in the wardrobe and never get worn.
Where to start?
A Style and Shape session is the best starting point. You discover that best clothing for your shape, we look into your style, this creates a foundation and going forward, you know exactly what to buy. We can then book in a Wardrobe session wherecreate more outfits, from your existing clothing and really start to create your capsule wardrobe.
